  • About the Artist

Anne Goetze resides on a small farm in the countryside outside of Leipers Fork, Tennessee. Her cherished subject matter features the rural life and landscape of middle Tennessee and a particular beloved town in the French Alps that she frequently visits.

Goetze was born into a family of artists and photographers, where the walls of her home offered her consistent visual beauty. Goetze also cites the documentary photography of Dorothea Lange during the Depression Era and the paintings of the French and American Impressionists from the late 19th century as her influences. Her work in Plein air and impressionism offers her complimentary mediums of expression through photography and painting, as well as a particular technique she developed working over the years as a hand retouch artist, where the two mediums are combined. She has studied with many contemporary artists and friends such as Anton Weiss, Quang Ho, Skip Whitcomb, and Dawn Whitelaw.

In this video, Anne Goetze talks about her work to document the lives and mission of the Sisters of the Visitation Order through photography and painting and the calling she feels to share this work with the world.

She has garnered an understanding by documentation, absorption, and reflection...that whether it be by our roots, transplanting, or just traveling through...we all share in a connection to God's Creation and the same shared relationship of our souls needing a 'sense of place.' Goetze's work is found in the permanent collections of The Tennessee State Museum and Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, as well as the personal collections of Oprah Winfrey, Tony Joe White, US Senator Fred Thompson, Tim McGraw, Michael McDonald, Naomi Judd, John Hiatt, Nashville Mayor Karl Dean, and Billy Ray Cyrus, among others.

Anne Goetze is a member of the Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, Metro Nashville Arts Commission, and The Chestnut Group, a non-profit Plein air painters group dedicated to land conservancy.
  • The Annecy, France Series

    The artist's inspiration:

"There is a part of my heart that was left in Annecy, France. I can close my eyes and see it; I can open my soul and feel it rush in. I would walk from the train station, past the Annecy Lake and the River Thiou, thru the old town's cobblestone streets, and begin the steep climb up the mountain.

  • The Georgetown Nun Series

    The artist's inspiration:

"When the paintings were finished, the frames made, the titles given, and the film edited… I thought 'Pray To Love; Love To Pray' was ready to go. But like everything else that has happened with this project, it needed more to convey the beauty of the Nuns and their story. Maybe some rich captions for each piece. So I started digging deeper... yet the words would not come.

  • The Toledo Nun Series

    The artist's inspiration:

"From Georgetown, four sisters and a novice came to Toledo in 1915,
transitioning from an academy to solely contemplative. For the mother foundress of the Toledo Monastery in 1918, Mother Mary Agnes, the rhythm of Visitation life centered around the Sacred Heart, the Eucharist, a hidden life of love of God and charity toward the neighbor.
