Earlier in the year, Mrs. Skubic met with each of the 5th graders individually to get to know them and talk about ideas for their 5th grade year. One of the students’ ideas was to have “elective” courses. After some thought and research, we decided to have the girls participate in a Student Ed Camp. For the camp, our 5th graders became our teachers! In order to prepare, we encouraged the 5th grade students to think about different talents and skills they possess that they would be able to teach to their friends in grades 1 – 4. They then submitted an application to teach an Ed Camp session. Dr. Albert had meetings with the soon-to-be teachers twice to ensure they were fully equipped to teach their electives. They learned how to prep for their lessons by collecting the adequate amount/type of supplies and they learned how to “lesson plan” a 45 minute class. February Student Ed Camp topics included: Rock Painting, Codes, Gelli Painting, Soccer, and How to Run a Party. We will hold two more Student Ed Camps – the 5th graders plan to teach cookie decorating, bookmark making, an extra PE class, slime, how to make a volcano, quick skits, balloon animals 101, inspirational posters, basketball, and Barbie makeovers.
