Who’s Behind the Mask?

Profe Kathleen Placke's Spanish 4CC class has been studying a unit focused on the theme of identity. As part of the unit, the class talked about heritage, historical figures, language, and more, then used what they learned to create identity masks.
Students selected a person of their choosing, then came up with eight symbols to represent the external identity of that person. The symbols could be accomplishments, family values, and more. The inside of the masks also had to include three symbols representing internal identity or elements of the person's identity that are not as readily seen or shared.

After selecting the symbols and creating the identity masks, students were tasked with writing a two-to-three-page paper describing the identity and characteristics of the person their mask was based on. This project organically integrated Hispanic Heritage Month into the curriculum and units while allowing student creativity and investigation. The finished masks were truly amazing!
