Future Scientists

Five Visitation Academy juniors attended the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology symposium on Saturday, April 1. The event, hosted by St. Louis University, was held at Doisy College of Health Sciences on the SLU campus.

Students were nominated and submitted research abstracts in hopes of presenting their work at the symposium. Our five Viz students, along with seven other area high school students, were selected to share their work. We are proud of each of them and excited to share that Rebecca Mooney took home a third-place award. Congratulations Rebecca!

The girls also were treated to lunch, met with a SLU student panel, and were given tours of the Medical School campus. In addition, participants met with SLU researcher Dr. Ezekiel and toured his Cancer Biology and Cell Signaling laboratory, followed by a meeting with Dr. Heuertz and a tour of the Bacterial Biofilms and Microbiology lab.

Here is a list of the student presentation topics:

Victoria Brennan - Hallux Valgus Deformity
Josephine Janisch - Cystic Fibrosis Research and Treatment
Allison Kowalczyk - The Use of Exposure and MDMA-Assisted Therapies for the Treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Veterans
Ali McDonald - An Analysis of Benzodiazepines as a Treatment for Substance Abuse Disorders
Rebecca Mooney - Dens Invaginatus, a Rare Dental Abnormality-Treatment Options and Future Implications
