Fellowship in Action: Senior Brings Service-Learning to Viz Lower School

As part of the Viz Fellowship Program, students complete a Capstone project — a culminating, hands-on experience that allows them to apply the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout their Fellowship journey.

This year, senior Julia G. brought her Service-Learning Fellowship work directly into the Viz Lower School classrooms. Partnering with Lower School counselor Catie Tyler, Julia designed and delivered an interactive, experiential counseling lesson that helped students understand how a physical disability can affect day-to-day life. Through thoughtful activities and guided discussion, Lower School students explored themes of empathy, inclusion, and understanding.
Julia’s lesson was an extension of her Fellowship focused on supporting children with disabilities. She dedicated more than 70 hours to serving at Variety St. Louis Adventure Camp, which supports St. Louis youth with physical or developmental disabilities. By creating meaningful connections between her community-based work and the Lower School, Julia deepened the impact of her Fellowship while enriching the learning experience of younger Viz students.

The Fellowship Program intentionally creates opportunities for students to connect their passions with authentic experiences — both in the broader community and within our own school when possible.

Julia will be one of approximately 40 students who will present their Capstone projects at the Fellowship Symposium on April 16.
