Cross-Curriculum Collaboration

What do you get when you take a group of AP biology students, add content from Spanish class, and mix in Campus Ministry? A whole lot of cross-curriculum collaboration. AP biology students recently completed a project centered around Dia De Los Muertos and All Souls Day. They were asked to create ofrendas (altars) to celebrate and honor a dead scientist. When choosing who to honor, students had to keep the following criteria in mind:
  • Visual themes of the holiday which usually include bright colors and motifs of flowers, butterflies, and skulls.
  • The selected scientist had to:
      • Be deceased - building an ofrenda to someone who is still alive is considered a little macabre and against the spirit of the holiday.
      • Be female (unless the individual selected was a relative of the student) and be lesser-known - no ofrendas to well-known scientists such as Einstein, Darwin, Carl Sagan, etc. were allowed.
      • Have contributed positively to human advancement.
The beautiful collection of completed ofrendas was displayed in the Chapel at Visitation for all to enjoy.
