A Matter of National Security

October 20-22, 2022, Viz's Upper School and Middle School CyberPatriot teams competed online in the first round of the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, the world's largest cybersecurity competition.

CyberPatriot is the Air Force Association's National Youth Cyber Education Program. Its National Youth Cyber Defense Competition challenges teams of high school and middle school students to find and fix cybersecurity vulnerabilities in virtual operating systems. Using a proprietary competition system, teams are scored on how secure they make the system. Top teams advance through the online rounds of competition, and the best of the best advance to the in-person National Finals Competition, March 17-21, 2023.
This year was the inaugural event for the Viz Middle School team (Olivia Bruns, Mary Anne Carroll, and Zoe Hill), and the team earned the third-highest middle school result in Missouri. The team also outscored three high school teams. Not bad for a first try! The trio of students representing the Viz Upper School (Katie Gasper, Ella Kadyk, and Kendall Stone – Viz's CyberPartriot club president) earned the 11th-highest score from Missouri schools. Nationally, the Upper School team placed in the top 35% of participating teams.

The next competition round is open from November 4-6. Good luck to our two Viz teams!
