Here's What's Cooking in the Diversity Club

After various conversations about ways to celebrate, embrace, expand, and educate fellow students about the diversity that exists at Viz, senior Erinn Porter's idea for the Diversity Club came to fruition. Students of varying races and ethnicities are using this new extracurricular opportunity to introduce peers to their culture through food.

On Thursday, March 23, sophomore Maia Crawford and her mom kicked things off, preparing traditional Filipino dishes in the food science kitchen, including lumpia spring rolls and rice cakes. Maia's mom also told her immigration story and the importance of food and shared meals in Filipino culture. This is the first of what will be an ongoing initiative of the Diversity Club. Senior Ava Sanford, who has grown up with Columbian influence and culture, is having a close family friend who is Columbian come in to share her heritage through food.

The Diversity Club, which currently has 37 Upper School members, meets every other week, rotating with the Peace and Justice Club. All students are invited and encouraged to participate. The Diversity club also is planning a trip to Cherokee Street, a well-known dynamic, multicultural neighborhood in St. Louis.
